The Gossamer carries two storylines that run simultaneously together. One, about dream-givers who cast dreams into human to make them strongers and protect them for nightmares cast by sinisteeds. On the other hand, a story about a little boy named John, and the older woman that cares for him. John, very unhappy to start, says and does thing to frustrate the woman. She just politely answers to his absurd statements, and this method actually took effect on John. As his behavior matures, he his plagued with nightmares during his sleep.

John stays with the woman because both, he and his mother were beaten by John's abusive father. The book also follows his mother, who is trying to get her life back on track. She gets a job at the school John attends, and sees him everyday. Littlest, a young dream-giver learning the ways casting dreams. Littlest comes in aid to the boy, gathering whatever good memories he has to offer to make the boy stronger and give him courage. She is taught by Thin Elderly, another dream-giver which Littlest studies under. For example, when the horde attacks John and the woman, Littlest cares for John, and Thin Elderly with the woman. Littlest also is the only one to survive a horde attack and recieve an award for it.
